From the 1882 history of DeWitt Co (Texas Twp): "The first mill was built on Salt creek, section fifteen, by a Mr. Allen in 1837. It was a water will provided with an undershot wheel. Both sawing and grinding wits done. The second, and only other mill was built by Mr. Mayall on the mine creek, on section thirteen, in 1848. It is now owned and operated by Asbury Smallwood. It is a good, substantial mill, provided with undershot wheel, and is also a combined saw and grist mill. Its capacity is quite limited, being dependent upon the water supply, and the grinding being limited to a single run of stone. " NOTE: On Eliza Smallwood's marriage certificate, it said her father's name was "A. Smallwood" and mother Elizabeth Martin.  Parmenius must have gone by his middle name. The 1861 Creek Twp tax list has "P. A. Smallwood", living in section 20, being taxed on 160 acres, and section 18, 19 acres. Newspaper accounts from June of 1882 tell of tremendous storms throughout DeWitt County and the flooding of Salt Creek.  One article mentioned that Smallwood's mill (which Asbury bought sometime between 1861 and 1870) was in "dangerous condition" and "still stand[ing] on its pegs." In August of 1882, most likely due to the recent storm damage, Asbury sold his farm (and, it is assumed, his mill) and moved to Cerro Gordo in Piatt County to operate another mill.  It is there that his wife Betsy died in 1883.  He must have moved back to DeWitt sometime before his death because his death record is in DeWitt County. In the affidavit signed by his brother, Joseph P. Smallwood, it states that P.A. went by "Ashbury", not Asbury. In the 1850 De Witt Co. census, "Pumenius" (25) and his wife Elizabeth (18) had no children.  He was a farmer and owned $500 worth of property. In the 1860 census of De Witt Co., Parmenius, 35, was living with his wife Elizabeth, 29, and their children Deborah, 9, Annette, 8, George, 5, Parmenius, 8, Josephine, 2.  He owned real property worth $5000 and personal property worth 300.  He was a farmer. In the 1870 census of Texas Twp., DeWitt Co., IL, Parmenius A. Smallwood, 46, was living with his wife Elizabeth, 37, and children Annetta A., 16, George D., 14, Parmenas M., 12, Josephine E., 10, Maggie, 5, and Leidie, 2 (pg5) In the 1880 census of Texas Twp., DeWitt Co., IL, "P. A. Smallwood", 55, was a farmer.  He was born in Ohio, and both parents were born in Virginia.  He was living with his wife Elizabeth (45 possibly), born in Illinois, and both parents born in Kentucky.  Also with them were their children Maggie, 14, Eliza, 12, and Samuel, 9.  Also living with him were R. W. Emery, 75, a boarder and a miller (Parmenius owned a mill), and Parmenius' two older sons, George, 23, who was teaching school, and Parmenius M., 21, who was at school. (pg272)
