In the 1850 census of DeWitt Co., IL, Thomas, 28, is living with wife Matilda, 27, and children Hency C., 8, Allen, 6, and Sarah, 1.  Thomas is a laborer and was born in KY.

In the 1860 census of Sulphur Springs Twp, Morgan Co., IL, Thomas, 38, is living with wife Julia A., 24.  He is a farmer with $200 worth of personal property.

It is unknown why Thomas did not have his children from Matilda living with him in 1860.  His son Allen was still in DeWitt County living with the Batteson Family and Henry was living with Gideon Smallwood,

In the 1880 census of Creek Twp, DeWitt Co., IL, Thomas, 57, is living with wife Julia, 44, and children Jane, 16, John, 13, and Deborah, 10.  His profession is wood chopper (pg120).

In the 1900 census of Creek Twp, DeWitt Co., IL, Thomas, 79 (b. Aug 1820), is living with wife Julia A., 63 (b. July 1836), and grandson Virvin, 21 (b. Jan 1888).  Julia is the mother of 8 children, 7 living.  They have been married 40 years.  Thomas could neither read nor write.  He rented his farm. (pg150)

According to son Henry's biographical sketch, Thomas was married three times, but records have been bound only for two.

From 9 sep 1902 edition of Decatur Herald: "The funeral of Thos. Spainhour, aged 83 year, who died at his home near Lane, on Saturday was held Sunday at 3 p.m.
