On her immigrant inspection card, "Elmast Khaladjian" arrived on the ship "SS La Savoie" of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique line, departing Havre, France, on Feb 14, 1920. Her card was stamped at Ellis Island on Feb 25, 1920. Her last residence is listed as Egypt. The journey to America took 9 days. The SS La Savoie arrived in New York via Bordeaux, France from Havre on Feb 23, 1920. According to the manifest, Almas made the trip the America with her sister Zarouhe Siranossian and nephew Vartan "Walter Siran" Siranossian. Her sister Bizar was not with them. Their last residence was listed as Cairo, Egypt. It is known that the Halajian sisters went to Jerusalem during their flight from Turkey. All sisters had a tatoo signifying their visit to the Holy City. They most likely visited Jerusalem before their arrival in Egypt. Almas was engaged to be married to a jeweler while still in the old country. Almas never learend to read and write, in either Armenian or English. Her sister Zarouhe (who could read and write) said that she just wasn't interested in school work. According to the rememberance of Zarohe Halajian, Almas was born sometime in the spring. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
